FGM, SRS AND THE LIBERAL HYPOCRISY!

“Islam allows female circumcision. Islam promotes the brutal and diabolical FGM (Female Genital Mutilation),” the neo-liberal-feminist-atheist accusation says. Debunking this claim is no rocket science. Because the irony remains in that, FGM is alien to Islam. And what’s more, it’s actually forbidden in Islam to deform any part of the body in this sense. This is evidenced by the Prophetic (ﷺ) teaching that Muslims understand, as a basic principle of Islam, which is : “Do not cause harm, or return harm.”

Now, let’s get to the figures and facts. Because here is the fun part. FGM, something that so many today are eager to deposit into the account of Islam, is in actuality, practiced the most, by Western women. And it only gets better from here. You can check out what is included in the definition given to FGM, on the official website of the World Health Organization, which is as follows:

Types of FGM

Female genital mutilation is classified into 4 major types.
Type 1: This is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans (the external and visible part of the clitoris, which is a sensitive part of the female genitals), and/ or the prepuce/ clitoral hood (the fold of skin surrounding the clitoral glans).

Type 2: This is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans and the labia minora (the inner folds of the vulva), with or without removal of the labia majora (the outer folds of the skin of the vulva).

Type 3: Also known as infibulation, this is the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the labia minora, or labia majora, sometimes through stitching, with or without removal of the clitoral prepuce / clitoral hood and glans (Type I FGM).

Type 4: This includes all other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non-medical purposes, e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing the genital area.(1)

Cliterodechtomy, partial or complete removal of the labia minora and labia majora(labiaplasty) of the vagina for cosmetic and other purposes, are all included by the World Health Organization’s official website, in their description of FGM. And even though these are most rampant amongst women in the Western countries, the World Health Organization has a special, sly interest in talking about statistics in Muslim countries!

Even when the World Health Organization states that “at least 200 million women are victims of FGM”(2), none of these figures specify how many people have resort to it voluntarily and otherwise, nor do they mention the number of transgender people, who undertook it as a part of SRS (Sex Reassignment Surgery). F to M (Female to Male) transgender people who undergo gender reassignment surgery also, are in fact, according to the definition of WHO, going through Female Genital Mutilation.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) brochure itself states that FGM is found in Australia, the United States, and many parts of Europe. (3) It doesn’t mention how many of the 200 million they’ve counted, belong to the Western countries, and the Muslim majority countries. However, guess what the cover picture of their brochure on this is? A Hijab-clad, African Muslim girl. Ha! Manipulative much? If the figures are published on a country-by-country basis, then even those who have undergone gender reassignment surgery will have to openly admit that they are on the list. This is where all of this gets really interesting.

Feminists and liberals have been parading around social media, shouting, “It’s time to end FGM,” and at the same time, have on their social media pages posted, a link to the ‘Go Fund Me’ website, to donate for a 15-year-old American girl’s gender reassignment surgery. How ironic! If their real goal was to preserve the sanctity of the human body, shouldn’t transgender surgery be opposed first ?! This is where the liberal duplicity of the issue becomes clear.

Female genital mutilation was never introduced by Islam, or the Prophet ﷺ . Anyone can check the evidence. The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and their successors have travelled to many countries to spread the message of Islam. If circumcision was indeed obligatory for both men and women, shouldn’t the Islamic preachers who migrated to different countries, have instructed both groups to perform circumcision? Isn’t Kerala, where Malik Dinar came to, itself a historical testimony to this?

All the Ahadith that have come up on this subject, which are hoisted up and about by Islamophobes, are weak. Let’s check them one by one.

Narrated Umm Atiyyah al−Ansariyyah: A woman used to perform circumcision in Medina. The Prophet ﷺ said to her: Do not cut severely as that is better for a woman and more desirable for a husband.(4)

In this chain of narration, we can see that Abu Dawud himself, who reported the hadith, said that this Hadith is weak because of the presence of an unknown person (مجهول), Muhammad ibn Hassan, in its chain.
In yet another one, also classed by scholars of Hadith Sciences, as Da’eef/weak, it goes:
‎ الختان سنة للرجال مكرمة للنساء
“Circumcision is Sunnah for men, and honourable for women.”(5)
Ibn Hajar in his Fath al-Bari states in 3:337 that, Hajjaj ibn ‘Artat, in its narrators’ series, wasn’t trustworthy in testimony, and therefore, the narrated Hadith is not conclusive, and hence, not authentic. This hadith has been quoted from Ibn ‘Abbas. Ibn al-Qayyim has said that its series is also weak.(6)

Now, even if one argues that it is an authentic hadith, it can be understood that female circumcision was only a practice which existed in many places, including Arabia, and that the Prophet ﷺ only said it was permissible (جائز), under the circumstances that it isn’t dangerous, and overdone. It’s a simple matter of learning to differentiate between something that’s considered permissible, and what’s made obligatory.

Let us also examine another hadith that is often quoted on this subject. The Prophet ﷺ said: “When a man sits between the four parts (arms and legs of his wife) and the two circumcised parts meet, then ghusl is obligatory.”(7)

What is clear here also, is that there were women in Arabia who practiced circumcision as part of their culture. Although the fact remains, that there is no evidence to suggest that this practice was incorporated into Islam, some scholars in the Shafi’i Madhhab and the Hanbali Madhab have agreed upon female circumcision as being permissible. The same Clitoral Hoodectomy that’s practiced in the Western countries today by women, for cosmetic and sexual gratification, is what has been classified as permissible by these few scholars.

NHS (National Health Service), under the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), the official health department in the UK, has instructions on how to do FGM, on their website. Yes, it’s the WHO guideline on how to perform Labiaplasty, called Type 2 FGM, by the very same folks!(8)

Clitoral hoodoplasty, also called ‘clitoral hoodectomy’ and ‘clitoral hood reduction surgery’, is a cosmetic, gynaecological procedure to reduce the amount of skin covering the clitoris. Western New York-based aesthetic gynaecology specialists (WNY) claim that women get more sexual stimulation, when this extra tissue is removed.(9)
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery discussed the reasons for an increase in the need of female genital surgery. It includes procedures that are frequently requested by women, such as “Clitoral Hood Reduction.”(10)  Twenty-one percent of the 2,600 board-certified plastic surgeons, proudly claim to have undertaken such procedures, according to a 2012 survey. Since 2014, there has been an 80% increase in cosmetic genital surgery for girls. According to a 2013 BBC report, the number of Western women and children approaching the NHS for labiaplasty has increased fivefold in 10 years.(11)

It is factually incorrect to say that clitoral hoodectomy is detrimental to a woman’s health.(12) We can see many sociologists, gynaecologists and academic scholars demanding for honesty, and to not mislead people into believing that female circumcision and FGM are one and the same, when it’s not, solely for the vested political interests of a group of people, in their hate propaganda.

And it’s been made evident, in the studies conducted by people such as, Richard Schweder,(13) an American anthropologist, Dr Juliet Rogers of Melbourne University,(14) Lucrezia Catania, the Italian gynaecologist,(15) etc.

Another baseless allegation is that women lose their sexuality if they are circumcised. But studies have shown that clitoral hoodectomy actually increases a woman’s sexual satisfaction!(16, 17)
Liberals, feminists and atheists who are clamouring for an end to FGM, thinking it’s a “Muslim thing”, we suppose will, on learning these basics, start their parades against SRS also now. The reality remains, that they themselves are clueless as to what they are arguing for! Don’t tamper with the ‘Biriyani’ and make it look like poison. The reports on FGM in Muslim majority countries are the perfect example for academic dishonesty by the “Superior West.” High time to know this.

Using the same argument do you reject and deplore the male circumcision also?
